This is generally body armour style knee guards, that protect the knees, lower thigh, and shins in the event of a crash on dirt of gravel. While these guards are ideal for off-road disciplines, they won't provide very much protection in a high speed fall on tarmac. If you need protection on your road bike, invest in a set of road knee guards, not those designed for off-road use.
