Motorcycle Impact Shorts
Whether you're a casual rider or a seasoned enthusiast, impact shorts are highly recommended for anyone that spends a lot of time riding on dirt, gravel and sand. While not suitable for road use, they should be seriously considered by any off-road rider.
Impact shorts don't offer the protection that you need for serious on-road riding. Since they only cover down to your knees, a lot of skin is left completely exposed and vulnerable to road rash and severe burns in the event of an on-road crash. Don't be the idiot that rides in shorts and a t-shirt, invest in some high quality protective clothing and protect yourself when you're on the road.

Where impact shorts are most useful is in off-road riding. Whether you're on loose gravel, sharp rocks or loose dirt, impact shorts can protect your legs and groin from impact injuries and skin and nerve damage. While the type of injuries that are typically sustained off-road are generally smaller and less life threatening than those from on-road riding, it's not uncommon to see broken bones and severe skin burns amongst riders that wear little or no protective gear. With the cost of high quality body armour, including impact shorts, reasonably low, it's wise to spend a little money up front on gear in order to minimise the possibility of an injury.
The best things to look for in impact shorts are quality construction, a high level of protective padding, and most importantly, a relatively comfortable fit. Poorly produced shorts will often fall apart and lose their protective qualities long before they should, and fail to cover even the most basic accident or fall. While better shorts cost a little extra, they pay for themselves many times over due to their longer lifespan and quality levels. The amount of protective cushioning can depend on the shorts' application; if you're spending a lot of time riding in high intensity bursts, then something with a high level of padding and protection is important. Finally, you want something that offers a comfortable fit. There's nothing worse than setting off on your off-road adventure only to find that you're stuck in uncomfortable gear all day.
